A Brief Lesson on Buddhism
Origin
The origin of Buddhism is in Northern India. Amazingly it was formed in the 5th century BCE. This religion originated in India, but it later spread to other parts of the world such as east and southeast Asia.
Founder
Supreme Being
There is no supreme being in Buddhism. Buddhist believe that we have complete responsibility over ourselves. It is also said that no other individual has the power to interfere in the workings of someone else's Kamma.
Key Beliefs
One of the major beliefs of Buddhists are the four noble truths. The four noble truths are: suffering exists, suffering arises from attachment to desires, suffering ceases when attachment to desire ceases, and freedom from suffering is possible by practicing the eightfold path. The eightfold path is wisdom on how to live life.
Major Holidays
There are actually many holidays celebrated in the Buddhist religion. There is "Buddha Day", Buddhist New Year, Sangha Day, and many more. Buddha Day is essentially a holiday specified to celebrate the birth of their founder, Buddha. Buddhist New Year is celebrate differently and on different days in various countries. Finally, Sangha Day is a holy day to observe an important event that took place in the lifetime of Buddha.
Religious Texts
The sacred books of Buddhism are called the Tipitaka Mahayana, and Vajrayana Canons.

Current Locations of Worship
Buddhists are allowed to worship at a temple of at their dwelling. If at home they are allowed to set aside a special place for worship and a shrine is optional. In these types of homes you will most likely find a statue of Buddha, candles and and incense burner.
Important People
Important people who helped shape the history of Buddhism are Dalai Lama and Thich Nhat Hanh. Dalai Lama was a Tibetan Monk who is most famous for being a supposed reincarnation of a past Lama who decided to be reincarnated to finish his works. Thich Nhat Hanh is known for being the best known Buddhist teacher. He is also known as a world renowned Zen master and has developed several pieces of writing.
